Directions to Murphy Bed Center, South Orlando:

Our South Orlando showroom is located on Orange Blossom Trail (US 441 / 17-92) where it intersects Florida’s Turnpike and SR 528 (Beach Line) at Consulate Drive. We’re on the left hand side heading south, the right hand side heading north. There is a convenient traffic light in front of our store that allows easy entrance and exit in both directions. Take Exit #4 off of SR 528 (no toll if coming from the west), or Exit #254 off of the Turnpike. You will want to head south on Orange Blossom Trail. We are on the left at the first traffic light after passing under SR 528 and the Turnpike.

If you are traveling EAST on SR 436 (from I-4 toward US 17-92 and the Airport):

We are approximately 3 miles from the I-4 Altamonte Springs exit directly on SR 436. Coming from I-4 you will pass the Altamonte Mall on your left. Continue past Maitland Avenue and cross the railroad tracks, passing Rooms To Go Outlet on your right. Shortly you will come to Circuit City Plaza. Immediately AFTER the traffic light for Circuit City make a right turn into our parking lot at Prairie Lake Pavilion. There is plenty of parking, with easy access to our store. If you plan to leave by making a LEFT turn onto SR 436 you are better off cutting through our parking lot to Circuit City and using the traffic light.

If you are traveling WEST on SR 436 (from the Airport and US 17-92 toward I-4):

We are less than a mile from the intersection of US 17-92 and SR 436 so you will want to be in the left hand lane at this point. After passing a McDonald’s on your right look to the left for Pearl Crafts. Immediately after Pearl you can move into the left hand turning lane to turn into our parking lot at Prairie Lake Pavilion. If you miss the turn (even we do sometimes), continue to the traffic light just beyond and make a left “U- Turn”, after which you will make an immediate right into our lot. There is plenty of easy parking for our store.

The Mechanisms: One hundred years ago the old style Murphy Beds were mostly all Panel-type Beds. Many didn’t even have face panels, they were just “naked” frames stuck in a closet or recessed in the wall. They were heavy, cumbersome units that often contained gas-piston cylinders which eventually failed and rendered the bed unusable. Today there are still some cheaper Panel Beds, often sold on the Internet, that utilize some sort of inexpensive gas piston system. Most Bi-Fold Murphy Beds currently being manufactured consist of a floor-mounted all-steel frame with counter-balanced springs.

The Pros and Cons:

• As you can see from the Panel Bed pictured above, the primary advantage of this type of mechanism is the ability to access the side cabinets when the bed is open without having to move the bed doors out of the way. Generally this is not an over-riding concern, but If this is an important feature for you then the disadvantages of Panel Bed Systems may be an acceptable trade-off.
• Because there are no doors to swing out beyond the width of the cabinet, Panel Beds often are the better option in very narrow space situations.
• Because the cabinet doors are coupled with the Murphy frame and mattress into one unit, Panel Beds must carry heavier loads to operate.
• Because of the extra weight involved, properly designed Panel Beds require a heavier and more complicated mechanism than Bi-Fold Beds. As a result, Panel Beds are generally more expensive and can be a bit more challenging to install. There are some very inexpensive, side-mounted gas piston kits available for the do-it-yourself market, some of which are even being sold at retail, but these are not designed for ease of use or long unit life.
• Since the entire door facing goes up and down with a Panel Bed, extra care must be taken in the design and assembly process, and some materials which can be used on Bi-Fold doors (such as mirrored glass) can not be used on Panel systems. There is generally a wider range of finishes and materials available for Bi-Fold Bed cabinets.
